While last year was marked by many haiku dealing with various diseases (including COVID-19), this year poets wrote many pieces about war, refugees and the like, but also about hope. Let us remember that, unlike the worst diseases, wars are "curable" — everything depends on our ability to recover a peaceful soul, close to nature.

Most likely this haiku is not referring to a refugee from Ukraine, but rather to the tragic fate of a young life lost on a Mediterranean beach. The juxtaposition (toriawase in Japanese) of the innocent image of the doll and the emptiness is deeply touching, whatever the country. The very absence of a season word, or kigo, powerfully conveys a "loss of meaning."

Even Japanese haiku masters might be jealous of the compositional sense and juxtaposition (toriawase) in this pure "link by emotion" (yojō-zuke) between the tooth and falling star, without an obvious logical connection. We recall the haiku composed in 1939 by the great Japanese poet Kusatao Nakamura: "Myriad green leaves/my child's teeth/start to grow." The discovery is the same: From the smallest baby tooth to the infinitely large cosmos, all life in the universe is connected through a kind of "mysterious communication."
